DOES MY CHILD NEED THERAPY?
Deciding if and when to get help for your child and family can be challenging and scary. It can also be confusing. Some problems in childhood are phases and will certainly pass on their own without professional intervention. Some won’t and a professional can help. While Heart In Heart Child Therapy is happy to talk to you about your individual needs, some general guidelines we give for when it may be time to seek therapeutic help are:
The problem is persisting for many weeks/months/years even with attempts to help
The problem is getting worse, not better, even with attempts to help
The problem is damaging relationships between family members
The problem requires lots of planning and reorganizing of family life in order to get by
The child is experiencing shame/low self worth/persistent anger, sadness or worry
The adults in the child’s life feel exhausted/angry/out of ideas
The child is struggling in multiple domains (i.e. home and school)
The child is experiencing a sudden change in behavior following a traumatic experience and/or a sudden change that seems out of character for the age and typical personality of the child
